On Site Pager Systems

Where there is a requirement to contact staff quickly, an on-site paging system is a cost-effective solution. Calls can be initiated manually via a simple keypad or from a PC. They can be linked to external alerts such as plant alarms, doorbells or fire alarms. They can be interfaced to computer systems, telephones and BMS to alert staff and communicate essential information. These can be integrated with lone worker alarms to summon assistance. Pagers can be made to beep, vibrate or both. GD Systems can provide full onsite demonstrations and range surveys for all equipment as well as consultancy on system design, configuration and integration to existing infrastructure.

Types of Pager

There are two main types of site pager currently available in the UK - numeric and alphanumeric. A wall display is also available.

Numeric Pagers

Numeric pagers have a small screen which can display a number message. Callers dial the pager number and are then prompted to key in their telephone number. The number entered is then sent, via the paging network, to the pager which alerts the user and displays the number. The numeric message can be any series of numbers (up to a maximum of 12 digits) and many users devise number codes that can be used to expand the range of messages.

Alphanumeric Pagers

Alphanumeric pagers can receive both numbers and text up to a maximum of between 80 and 240 characters (depending upon the model chosen) and have screens capable of displaying between 2 and 8 lines of text at a time.

Wall mounted Scrolling Display

In communal areas where it would be advantageous to publicly display a message, large character scrolling displays are available. These have an matrix of LEDs forming alphanumeric characters up to 4 ¾" high. These can be read from distances up to 60m Keyboard operation
The simplest method of paging is from a keyboard attached to the transmitter. Enter the pager number, type in the massage and simply press send.

Interfaces

There are a number of methods available to generate a massage for paging.

Paging transmitters

The heart of an on-site paging system is the paging transmitter. There are many variants on offer.

Options

Personal Computer Interface

Paging systems can be connected to a PC. This will then allow paging in both numeric and alphanumeric formats. The ability to store unlimited pre-programmed messages, automatic diary / scheduling functions to remind personnel about meetings, appointments and duties. These can be programmed weeks or months in advance. It is even possible to send text messages to mobile phones

Telephone Interface

Where several people may need to contact staff, often the best solution is a telephone interface. Generally, it is as simple as picking up the nearest telephone receiver, dialling the pager extension number and entering the pager number that you wish to call.

Alarm Paging

Paging transmitters can be configured with volt free inputs. This allows anything from doorbells, machinery, building management systems, security systems to automatically call a pager or group of pagers with a specific message.

Deaf Alert

Recent legislation requires all UK employers to make provision for disabled staff and customers, particularly in the area of Fire Safety. With one in seven of the population being deaf or hard of hearing, the need for effective fire warning technology is imperative. The pager can be programmed to  prevent accidental switch off and locked in vibrate mode
